Owen Burne/Burn/Bunn:
Owen Bunn was likely born ca 1660/1670. I suspect that he
was the immigrant ancestor of the Bunn - Burn families VA and NC, although this
has not been fully proven, and was of Scots or Scot-Irish origin.
In early Virginia,
rights for land patents were established by each new settler arriving in the
Colony, and these lists of head rights (which were freely transferable) provide
and approximately dated indication of arrivals in the Colony. These are
abstracted in N.M. Nugent, "Cavaliers and Pioneers...", Wherein we find (Vol II p 336)
that on 20th October 1691
a Mr. Wm. Mayo received a patent of 170 acres along the main Black Water in
Isle of Wright Co., VA due for the importation of 4 persons, John Vates, Owen Burnes, Wm. Calfe, Mary Nickell.
Some of the Isle of Wright records are available in
abstract. J.B. Boddie, "Seventeenth Century Isle
of Wright Co., VA" (Boddie page 635, Deed Book 1) shows that on 19th September
1698 Hugh Campbell of Norfolk Co., VA sold to Owen Burn of Isle of Wright Co., VA 200 acres on the Blackwater
joining Richard Braswell.
