Notes for Samuel Rutherford Bunn

Notes written by Samuel Rutherford Bunn

I was born January 17, 1931 in Forsyth, GA at 355 Indian Springs Drive across from the First Baptist Church. We lived the first five years in Atlanta where my father operated a chain drycleaning stores. In 1936 my father contracted T.B. and had to go to a sanitorium for several years. My mother, my sister Susan and I moved in with my grandmother in Forsyth. I started first grade in a private school there since my birthday wouldn't allow me to start in public school until I was six and a half. I transferred to Banks Stevens Grammar School in the Second Grade.
My High School years were filled with school, piano lessons, band, and taking pictures. I probably was the only student who had film developing facilities at home, and I took pictures of everyone and everything around.
Upon my graduation in 1947, I went to Georgia Military College in Milledgeville my freshman year, rooming with Ernest Blackwell. We were both in the band there where I continued playing the Saxophone. I also sang in the Milledgeville A Cappella Choir and toured with them.
In the fall of 1948, I transfered to Emory University where I pledge Signa Nu Franternity. I graduated there in 1951 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. I enlisted in the Navy in August and completed boot camp and disbursing clerk school in San Diego. In March 1952, I received an appointment to Office Candidant School in Newport Rhode Island and in June was commissioned Ensign, USN. Four days later I married Julia Alford from Milledgevile and moved to my first assignment: Navy Supply Corps School in Bayonne, New Jersey. I later seved in Charleston, SC. In June 1955 I was discharged into the Inactive Naval Reserve where I continue to participate until I had 20 years of service.
In June 1955 I began work at Bunn's Laundry in Griffin where I worked for five years. By this time we had a daughter who was followed by two brothers and finally in 1961 another girl completed our complement of children. In 1960 I bought the Griffin Laundry and operated it for 10 years.
In 1971 I began a three year job with Diamond Shamrock Chemical Company as a salesman. I loved the work, but my job was terminated in 1973 when the territory was eliminated. My dreams of retiring from this company was shattered. I once again entered the drycleaning business in Griffin where I operated a cleaning plant for 18 months. Several things happened during this 18 months, however. In December my wife of 21 years divorced me. In March I met "Faye" and fell head over heels in love with her. We were married June 7, 1974. Faye has three children, a boy and two girls. We now have 14 grandchildren between our seven children.
In 1975 I went to work for the Southeastern Fabicare Association which had just formed a credit union the year before. I have always loved banking and numbers and such, so the credit union became the tail wagging the dog. In 1982 I resigned from the association to become the President of the Sunbelt Credit Union. I worked in this capacity until February 1993 when I retired from work and assisted Faye in spoiling our grandchildren.
We are both active in our Baptist Chuech where our son-in-law and father of 8 of our 15 grandchildren is Minister of Music. We travel as much as money and time allow, trying to make at least one major trip each year. God has richly blessed us. All seven children and their spouses are born again Christians and active in various churches. We try to live a Godly life in their presence and set an example for them to follow. (Updated 1/2000)
